Becker Sensed Trouble for Zverev Before the Match Began

Boris Becker noticed a stark difference in the body language of Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev as they entered Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open final. Becker believed Zverev was in trouble even before the first ball was struck.

Sinner went on to dominate the match, securing a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory to successfully defend his title at the Melbourne Major. At just 23 years old, Sinner extended his unbeaten run in Grand Slam finals, having now won a Major every time he has reached the final.

For Zverev, however, it was another heartbreak. This marked his third loss in a Grand Slam final, following defeats at the 2020 US Open and the 2024 French Open.

Becker Breaks Down the Key Difference Between Sinner and Zverev

Speaking on the Becker Petkovic podcast alongside fellow German tennis player Andrea Petkovic, Becker highlighted one critical aspect—mindset.

“When he (Zverev) walked onto the court with his shoulders slightly slumped forward and his head hanging low, I thought ‘Oh god, oh god, oh god.’ He’s tense, he’s nervous, he’s not in the right mindset. This is going to be a tough one. Then Jannik Sinner stepped onto the court, and he looked like pure sunshine—focused, chest out, head held high,” said Becker.

Mindset Played a Decisive Role, Says Becker

A two-time Australian Open champion, Becker emphasized that while technical skills matter, mentality ultimately decides Grand Slam finals.

“In a final like this, of course, it’s about strategy, forehands, and ball control. But above all, it’s about your mindset and your mentality. And for me, that was the big difference between Sinner and Zverev. Of course, the South Tyrolean played perfectly—credit where it’s due. On hardcourts, he’s almost unbeatable, not just for Zverev, but for anyone,” added Becker.

Sinner’s Dominant Run and ATP Rankings Update

Sinner had a near-flawless campaign, dropping just two sets en route to the title. Zverev also lost only two sets but had an unconventional path to the final, as Novak Djokovic retired during their match.

With this victory, Sinner strengthened his hold atop the ATP rankings, now sitting at 11,830 points, while Zverev trails in second place with 8,135 points.
