This year’s Miami Open is guaranteed to have a new champion. Jannik Sinner, who won last year’s Masters 1000 event, is suspended until May after reaching a case settlement in his doping case.

The controversy surrounding Sinner’s case means his name may still be making headlines by the time the tournament begins. However, fans will still get to watch some of the biggest stars in action.

Novak Djokovic’s Return

Novak Djokovic is set to return to the Miami Open for the first time since 2019. Despite being a six-time champion, he has chosen to prioritize Grand Slams in recent years.

The conditions in Florida suit Djokovic’s game perfectly, and the stands will surely be packed for his first Miami Open appearance in six years. He will be hoping for a strong performance following his early loss to Matteo Berrettini at the 2025 Qatar Open.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Miami Memories

Carlos Alcaraz won his first Masters 1000 title in Miami back in 2022, defeating Casper Ruud in the final at just 18 years old.

In recent years, his results in Miami have been mixed:

• 2023: Lost to Jannik Sinner
• 2024: Shock quarterfinal defeat to Grigor Dimitrov

With Sinner absent this year, Alcaraz may fancy his chances of reclaiming the title, as the Italian has been the best hardcourt player in the world since early 2024.

Alexander Zverev’s Big Opportunity

With Sinner out, Alexander Zverev could enter Miami as the No. 1 seed. The 2025 Australian Open runner-up also has the chance to overtake Sinner as the world No. 1 before his return.

Zverev has yet to win the Miami Open, coming closest in 2018, when he lost the final to John Isner.

Home Favorite: Ben Shelton

Ben Shelton, a US Open and Australian Open semifinalist, will bring his electrifying game to Miami. Last year, he lost in the Round of 32 to Lorenzo Musetti, but he will be aiming for a deeper run this time.
