Nadal Retires After a Legendary Career

Legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal hung up his racket at the 2024 Davis Cup in front of his home crowd in Málaga. His compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz, who played doubles alongside the 22-time Grand Slam champion at the event, recently revealed why he has not been in touch with his idol since the retirement ceremony.

The 14-time Roland Garros champion ended his career after entertaining fans for nearly two decades. The former World No.1 had epic battles with rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, often putting his body on the line while displaying his indomitable spirit. However, the 38-year-old was forced to retire last year following a long battle with injuries.

“Nadal Deserves to Spend Quality Time with His Family,” Says Alcaraz

Although Nadal and Alcaraz teamed up to play doubles at the 2024 Olympic Games and the Davis Cup, they are not particularly close friends. The younger Alcaraz has frequently expressed admiration for Nadal, often stating that the legendary Spaniard was his idol growing up. However, he admitted that he has not spoken to Nadal since the retirement ceremony.

“Rafa and I have a very good relationship, but I haven’t spoken to him again after his withdrawal from the Davis Cup,” admitted Alcaraz in an interview before his first match in Doha. “I think he deserves to be at peace with his family and enjoy the things he couldn’t when he was playing.

“For me, he has been and still is a great role model. I saw that he congratulated me on social media, but I haven’t had the chance to talk to him yet. I’m sure the time will come to do so.”
