Alcaraz Skips China Open for Japan Open
In a surprising move, Carlos Alcaraz has decided not to defend his 2024 China Open title, instead choosing to compete at the Japan Open in 2025.
The Spaniard, a former World No.1, secured the China Open title last year after a thrilling final against Jannik Sinner. Their three-hour battle ended in a dramatic third-set tiebreaker, marking Alcaraz’s third consecutive win over the Italian.
Alcaraz Confirms Japan Open Participation
Despite being the defending champion, Alcaraz will not return to Beijing this year. The official Japan Open Instagram page confirmed that the reigning Wimbledon champion will participate in the ATP 500 event in Tokyo.
Both the China Open and Japan Open are scheduled for the same week—from September 22-28, 2025—forcing players to choose between them.
Why Is Alcaraz Skipping the China Open?
Alcaraz has not yet explained his decision to skip the China Open, which traditionally attracts more top 10 players due to its larger prize purse. However, this isn’t the first time the Spaniard has adjusted his schedule.

Earlier in the season, he opted out of clay-court tournaments like the Argentina Open and Rio Open, choosing to play on hard courts in Rotterdam and Qatar instead.
