Aryna Sabalenka has opened up about her “relaxed” off-court relationship with Iga Swiatek. The two top-ranked tennis stars were recently seen enjoying each other’s company during the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi, even training together and sharing laughs.

Rivalry at the Top of Women’s Tennis

Since Ashleigh Barty’s retirement in April 2022, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka have battled for the No. 1 ranking. Swiatek held the top spot for 75 weeks before Sabalenka dethroned her in September 2023. The Polish star regained the position briefly, but Sabalenka reclaimed it by the end of 2024 and has held it since.

Speaking at the Brisbane International, Sabalenka shared her thoughts:

“I thought we have to stay together, have fun, and just enjoy our rivalry, not be too tough on each other.”

The Belarusian revealed that she invited Swiatek to train with her during the World Tennis League, and the two even shared a fitness session afterward.

“It’s been becoming more chilled between us. She’s a really nice person, and it was fun to get to know each other.”

Focus on the Australian Open

Sabalenka, riding a 14-match winning streak in Melbourne, is the favorite to secure a historic third consecutive Australian Open title.

“I didn’t know about that [record] till a few days ago,” she admitted. “It’s cool, but I better focus on myself. If I bring my best tennis, I know I can achieve it.”

Despite being the top seed, Sabalenka downplayed her ranking:

“It doesn’t matter what your ranking [is]. You have to go there, compete, fight, and do your best. It doesn’t matter whether you’re one, two, three, or 100.”

Moving Forward with Confidence

While Swiatek is leading Poland in the United Cup, Sabalenka is preparing for the Brisbane WTA 500. Their friendly rivalry promises an exciting year ahead in women’s tennis, blending fierce competition with mutual respect.
