Casper Ruud has echoed Novak Djokovic’s heartfelt plea for Rafael Nadal to reconsider his retirement and continue playing tennis. The Norwegian player admitted he was slightly surprised by Nadal’s decision, as he believed the former World No. 1 might “give it one more try” on clay next year.

Nadal’s Last Professional Tournament

Nadal, who began his professional journey in 2001, is set to play the final event of his illustrious career at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga from November 19-24. His last competitive singles match was against Djokovic at the Paris Olympics in July, and the two also faced off at the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh last month.

Djokovic’s Tribute to Nadal

After their recent meeting in Saudi Arabia, Djokovic paid tribute to Nadal, urging him to stay in tennis a bit longer:

“Congratulations for all the titles and an amazing career to you and your team,” Djokovic said. “I wish you all the best of luck for the future. From not just me but the entire tennis world, thank you for the legacy you’ve left. Don’t leave tennis, man—stay a little bit longer, stay with us.”

Ruud’s Perspective on Nadal’s Retirement

Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Finals, Ruud shared his own thoughts on Nadal’s retirement in a press conference. While he won’t attend the Davis Cup Finals in person, he acknowledged Nadal’s profound impact on players and fans alike:

“I won’t go. I’ve played and seen enough tennis during the year, so I’ll watch it on TV, probably on a beach, quiet and relaxed,” Ruud said, smiling. “I think Novak put it well during the Saudi tournament. Please don’t retire yet, because you have so many fans around the world.”

Ruud also recalled Nadal’s popularity among fellow players at Roland Garros this year, saying:

“One match that showed it quite clearly was during Roland Garros when Rafa played Zverev. You don’t usually see players like [Iga] Swiatek, Novak, and Carlos [Alcaraz] coming out to watch the first round of a Slam. But when it’s Rafa, it’s different.”

Ruud’s Hopes for Nadal’s Farewell

Ruud admitted that Nadal’s retirement announcement came as a surprise, as he had hoped Nadal might play another clay season. However, he understands the toll injuries have taken on Nadal:

“It caught me a little bit by surprise. I thought he might give it one more try on clay. But I know he’s struggled with pain and injuries, which can mentally tear you down. At some point, you just have to call it a day.”

As a devoted fan, Ruud expressed his hopes for Nadal’s farewell:

“I hope he has the kind of retirement he deserves. It’s going to be sad, and there will be some tears. I hope they make it to the final, and we get to see him play a few more times. Wishing him all the best for what’s next.”
