‘You Shouldn’t Retire’: Rune Questions Nadal’s Decision After Practicing Together

Rafael Nadal and Holger Rune joined forces at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia, where Rune revealed his surprise at Nadal’s impressive form during practice sessions.

The exhibition, which included players like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev, served as Nadal’s second-to-last appearance before his anticipated retirement at the Davis Cup Finals. While Nadal’s recent struggles with injuries had lowered expectations, he showcased flashes of brilliance that left an impression on Rune.

Nadal’s Performances at Six Kings Slam

Despite limited play over the last two years, Nadal competed fiercely:

• He displayed magic moments during a straight-sets loss to world No. 2 and fellow Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz. Notably, the two are expected to team up in doubles at the Davis Cup Finals.
• In a thrilling face-off with Novak Djokovic, Nadal narrowly missed securing a set, ultimately losing 2-6, 6-7. Afterward, Djokovic paid an emotional tribute to his long-time rival, highlighting Nadal’s enduring impact.

Future at the Davis Cup Finals

Nadal’s form at the Six Kings Slam has fueled speculation about his potential role at the Davis Cup Finals. While Alcaraz is guaranteed a singles slot, Roberto Bautista Agut is another strong contender for the remaining position after an impressive European Open run.

Nadal, however, has stated he will only play singles if he’s fully prepared, emphasizing caution in his decision-making.

Rune Reflects on Nadal’s Intensity

At the Paris Masters, Rune shared his admiration for Nadal and Djokovic’s intensity, noting that training with Nadal in Riyadh made him question if retirement was truly the right path for the 38-year-old Spaniard.

“I remember training with Rafa in Riyadh, and it’s surprising. This guy is almost retired, yet he trains with such intensity that you think: ‘You shouldn’t retire,’” said Rune. “He’s had an incredible career, and he’s achieved so much. It’s not for nothing that Rafa and Novak both give their all in every training session.”

Although Rune only played one match—losing to Alcaraz—he valued the camaraderie built throughout the week.

“It was a lot of fun… Training with the boys all week and doing activities together brought us closer. It was really fun,” Rune said, emphasizing the sense of connection formed among the six elite players.
