Djokovic’s Decision to Withdraw from the Paris Masters

Roger Federer’s former coach, Ivan Ljubicic, recently explained why Novak Djokovic has opted out of the Paris Masters. The Serbian legend, who has won the Paris Masters seven times, announced his decision last Wednesday, just before the tournament began on October 26. The event will wrap up on November 3.

According to Ljubicic, Djokovic may be “not physically or mentally ready” to compete at this stage of the season.

Djokovic’s Future in Question: Focus Shifts to Grand Slams

At 37, Djokovic’s priorities seem to have shifted. Although he ranks sixth in the Race to Turin and could qualify for the ATP Finals, it’s uncertain if he will participate. Last year, he capped off a brilliant season by winning both the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals. However, Ljubicic believes Djokovic is no longer focused on the ATP rankings or smaller tournaments but rather on Grand Slams.

“I don’t know how much longer Novak will play, and I don’t think he knows it either. In my opinion, he is not interested in smaller tournaments or a place on the ATP list,” Ljubicic shared. “I don’t think he is physically or mentally ready for that anymore. However, he showed everyone in Shanghai that when he wants to, he can still be among the best.”

Preparing for 2025: Djokovic’s Strategic Vision

Looking ahead, Ljubicic suggests Djokovic is gearing up for 2025 and the Australian Open, rather than the ATP Finals in Turin. Djokovic himself has previously spoken of his friendship with Ljubicic, noting the “weird” feeling of seeing him as Federer’s coach.

Djokovic has only one remaining exhibition match this year: a farewell event for Juan Martin del Potro in Buenos Aires on December 1.

A Season of Achievements and Setbacks

Djokovic’s absence from Paris follows a summer of milestones, including his first Olympic gold in Paris. However, he was denied a 100th career title earlier this month, losing to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai final. Djokovic’s recent focus on Grand Slams and select events marks a strategic choice to prioritize longevity and top-tier competition.
