Novak Djokovic is set to be the last man standing from tennis’ legendary ‘Big Three’ in the New Year. Yet, even he may consider retirement—if one condition is met.

Jimmy Connors on Djokovic’s Future

Tennis legend Jimmy Connors believes that Djokovic won’t hang up his racket until the new generation forces him out. Speaking on his Advantage Connors podcast (via Daily Express), the eight-time major champion expressed confidence that Djokovic isn’t stepping away from the sport anytime soon.

“It’s hard for me to say he has had a drop in motivation because he does everything throughout the day to make himself as good as he can be,” said Connors. “With his training and his eating, everything about his day is centered around tennis and being the best he can be.”

The Aging Factor

Connors, 72, also acknowledged the effects of aging, hinting that some on the ATP tour might see Djokovic as the “old, grey mare.” However, he’s certain that Djokovic still has the skill and strength to challenge the next generation.

“But he has got the kind of game I like. He has a good return, an aggressive return. I am not counting him out ever. He’s got guts, the game, and intensity. He is like [Rafael] Nadal; he’s not going to go out there unless he is ready to play.”

The Rise of Sinner and Alcaraz

The younger stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are rapidly establishing themselves. Sinner claimed both the Australian Open and US Open, while Alcaraz took the French Open and Wimbledon.

Will Djokovic Retire Soon?

Despite facing fresh competition, Connors is convinced that Djokovic still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

“We talk about Sinner and Alcaraz, but the only way he’s going to say it’s time to go is if some of those other guys start stepping up, or else he’ll keep hanging on. And what’s wrong with that?”

Djokovic’s Dominance in the 21st Century

Djokovic, often regarded as the most dominant force in modern tennis, has defied expectations by contesting all four Grand Slam finals last year. However, 2024 saw a slight shift; he didn’t clinch a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2017, though he did secure Olympic gold at Paris 2024.
