Jannik Sinner Withdraws from ATP Masters 1000 Paris Tournament

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 Paris Masters, missing the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris. Despite a strong season, Sinner won’t be competing in this final tournament due to health issues.

Sinner’s Stellar Year Marred by Illness

The 23-year-old Italian has had an intense season, excelling in most of the tournaments he entered. However, health setbacks forced him to miss the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris due to tonsillitis, and now a viral illness has impacted his participation at the Paris Masters.

“I’m very disappointed to tell you that I’m not able to play here in this tournament,” Sinner shared. “I came very early here to prepare. But I fell sick, and I’m having a virus at the moment, which is going to last the next two-three days, so body-wise, I’m not ready to compete.”

Maintaining the No. 1 Ranking Despite Setbacks

Sinner currently enjoys a comfortable 4,000-point lead over Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings, which means his World No. 1 spot is not at risk. However, he expressed disappointment over missing this competitive opportunity in Paris.

His potential path included a challenging second-round match against Ben Shelton, but now his focus shifts to rest and recovery.

“After the first practice session, I didn’t feel good,” he explained. “I also talked with the doctor on Sunday…it’s a virus, and I should feel better in three or four days.”

Preparing for the ATP Finals and Beyond

Sinner also addressed speculation regarding his priorities for the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals. His top priority, however, remains a full recovery.

“For sure, the most important part is to recover and get back physically 100%,” he noted. “Hopefully, I feel better in the next three, four days, so I can start practicing again. The main goal is Turin, but right now, it’s essential to see how I feel.”

Paris Masters Replacement: Arthur Cazaux Steps In

Though disappointing for his fans, Sinner’s absence opens an opportunity for home favorite Arthur Cazaux to join the tournament as a lucky loser, which may be a silver lining for Paris supporters.
