When Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic Battled and Bantered for the Last Time
Rafael Nadal played what could be the final singles match of his illustrious career late on Friday, facing none other than Novak Djokovic. Fittingly, it was against the player with whom he shared one of the greatest rivalries in men’s tennis.
Nadal’s Final Clash Against Djokovic
At the Six Kings exhibition tournament in Riyadh, Nadal fell 2-6, 6-7(5) to Djokovic in a hard-fought contest. The Spaniard had earlier announced his plans to retire from professional tennis after representing Spain in the Davis Cup finals next month.
A Warm Farewell on the Court
Following their final encounter, Nadal and Djokovic shared a heartfelt embrace at the net. The exchange was in sharp contrast to the fierce battles they’ve fought over nearly two decades.
Nadal took the opportunity to pay tribute to Djokovic:
“Thank you, Novak, for everything, for all the moments we shared on court during our careers. It’s been an amazing rivalry,” Nadal said, according to Reuters. “In a personal way, you helped me go over my limits for almost 15 years. Without that, I wouldn’t be the player I am today. Congratulations for all the titles and your amazing career. I wish you and your team all the best for the future.”
Djokovic’s Response
Djokovic, visibly emotional, responded in kind:

“It’s been an incredible honour and an incredible pleasure to share the court with you. It’s been quite an emotional moment today, as we’ve played so many matches over the years.”
