Spurs Boss Ange Postecoglou’s Comments on West Ham Are Shameful

If West Ham thought things couldn’t get any worse after their demoralizing 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, they were mistaken.

The Hammers are left licking their wounds after a horror show against Spurs. Historically, West Ham has been tough opposition for Tottenham, and given the significance of this fixture for both sets of fans, a display of passion and competitiveness should be a given.

Early Promise Turns to Disarray

Things started well for Julen Lopetegui’s side when Mohammed Kudus put them in front after just 18 minutes. However, what followed was simply unacceptable.

Tottenham equalized deservedly before the break, but West Ham still had the opportunity for a positive result away from home.

Second Half Collapse

Unfortunately, the second half was an abomination as West Ham conceded three goals in just eight minutes. It could have been four goals in nine minutes, but Tottenham captain Son Heung-min struck the inside of the post, keeping the score down.

West Ham had no chance of recovering, especially after Kudus “floored” three Tottenham players and was subsequently sent off. Former referee Mike Dean has indicated that Kudus will likely face a six-game ban for the incident.

Pressure Mounts on Lopetegui

The disappointing result against their fiercest Premier League rivals has increased pressure on Lopetegui while easing the pressure on Spurs’ boss, Ange Postecoglou, who continued to employ that controversial high line.

Postecoglou’s Controversial Remarks

What Postecoglou told his in-house media team about West Ham after the victory is nothing short of shameful. Typically, managers share platitudes about their opponents pre- and post-match, but Postecoglou’s comments seem to rub salt in the wounds of West Ham fans.

Postecoglou stated that his team just “blew West Ham away.” He described the first half as merely “a bit of an arm wrestle” and claimed that the score should have been 5-1 or 6-1 in favor of Spurs.

“I thought the boys were good today,” Postecoglou said. “They (West Ham) gave us a bit of an arm wrestle in the first half—they’re a tough team to play against because they’ve got some physicality that you have to deal with. The disappointing goal we let in was met with a good response…”

He continued, “In the second half, we were really, really dominant, showing all the facets of our game that we needed to. We could tell if we went up a gear, we could win the game. We scored the goals; we probably could have had a couple more. Sometimes we haven’t capitalized on those moments and kept the opposition in it, but we kind of blew them away.”

The Need for Accountability

For a Tottenham manager to come out and say his team “blew West Ham away” and should have won by a larger margin is utterly embarrassing for West Ham.

Lopetegui must take action to correct this situation. West Ham has folded like a house of cards, and not for the first time under the Spaniard’s management. He is expected to get more out of the players, not to see them collapse in crucial matches.
