Djokovic Survives Mensik and Injury Scare to Reach 9th Shanghai Masters Semi-Final

Novak Djokovic had to elevate his game to overcome Jakub Mensik at the 2024 Shanghai Masters, securing a spot in his ninth semi-final at the event.

Djokovic’s Success at the Shanghai Masters

The Serbian star has a remarkable record at the Shanghai Masters, reaching the semi-finals almost every time he has played. His only slip was in 2019 when he made it to the quarter-final. This year, Djokovic clinched his 10th consecutive quarter-final in Shanghai, and with a win in the quarter-final, secured his ninth semi-final berth.

Mensik’s Challenge

Despite Djokovic’s success, getting to the semi-final was no easy feat. Jakub Mensik, who previously defeated top players like Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov, pushed Djokovic hard—especially in the first set.

Both players served exceptionally well in the first six games. However, Mensik started to feel the pressure in the seventh game, facing two break points, which he managed to save. Djokovic eventually capitalized on his third break point later in the set, giving him the chance to serve for the set at 5-4.

Mensik Forces a Tie-Break

Surprisingly, Mensik broke back to level the match at 5-5 and forced a tie-break. Although Djokovic initially took a 3-0 lead, Mensik staged an inspired comeback, winning the tie-break 7-4 to take the first set.

Djokovic Fires Back in the Second Set

Djokovic responded with authority in the second set, breaking Mensik’s serve in the second game to take a 3-0 lead. Although Mensik fought hard, Djokovic broke again to lead 5-1 and comfortably served out the set, winning 6-1 and pushing the match into a decider.

The Decisive Third Set

In the third set, Djokovic continued to apply pressure, earning two break points in the third game, though Mensik managed to save them. However, Djokovic eventually broke his opponent to take a 3-2 lead. As the match progressed, Djokovic began feeling discomfort in his left knee—although it wasn’t the knee he had previously had surgery on. Despite the pain, Djokovic held on to win the match 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4.

Djokovic’s Next Challenge

Djokovic will now face Taylor Fritz in the semi-final, who overcame David Goffin in the other quarter-final. However, more important than his next opponent is Djokovic’s health, as the Serbian will aim to finish the season strong while managing any potential injuries.
