Ange Postecoglou’s Surprising Decision on Lucas Bergvall’s Tottenham Future

Since arriving this summer, Lucas Bergvall has made significant strides at Tottenham Hotspur, quickly earning a place in Ange Postecoglou’s first team.

Despite only having played in Sweden’s Allsvenskan before, the 18-year-old Bergvall has brought a mature approach to his game, rarely losing possession.

Initially, many might have expected Bergvall to spend some time with Wayne Burnett’s successful Premier League 2 side during his early months at Spurs. However, Bergvall has already positioned himself alongside Archie Gray at Tottenham, a player who cost nearly four times more than the young Swede.

Bergvall featured for 45 minutes in both recent friendlies against Bayern Munich, indicating that he would play a significant role this season. However, a report in Sunday’s edition of The Mirror suggests otherwise.

Potential Loan Move for Bergvall

In Sunday’s printed edition (11/08, page 77), it was reported that Postecoglou is considering loaning out Bergvall this season, possibly to ensure he gains regular playing time.

The report initially focused on Tottenham’s plans for Tyrese Hall this season—another promising young talent at the club. Hall, expected to be Postecoglou’s next breakthrough star, is set to go out on loan, with Spurs chiefs having ‘high hopes’ for him, according to the report.

In addition to Hall, The Mirror named four other Spurs youngsters who could be loaned out, including Bergvall. Tottenham may also look to arrange moves for Ashley Phillips, Alfie Devine, and Dane Scarlett—three players who were all on loan in the EFL last season.

Bergvall’s Future at Tottenham

It would certainly be surprising if Postecoglou decided to let Bergvall leave in any capacity this summer. Tottenham has been highly impressed with Bergvall, who has exceeded the club’s initial expectations.

After Dejan Kulusevski recently praised Bergvall, it would be unexpected for Spurs not to require his services during a season where they will also compete in Europa League games.

On the other hand, a six-month loan stint at a Championship club could help further develop Bergvall, preparing him for a more prominent role in Tottenham’s first team.
