INEOS Seals £52m Priority Signing: Man Utd’s Dream Defence After Four Transfers

In INEOS’ first summer overseeing Manchester United’s recruitment, the focus is on overhauling Erik ten Hag’s defence. Significant changes are underway with several key transfers.

Diogo Dalot, who established himself as Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back last season, is set to play another crucial role this season. The 25-year-old made 50 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, second only to goalkeeper Andre Onana’s 51. Dalot’s consistency limited Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s game time, and United are open to selling Wan-Bissaka if a suitable offer comes in. Should Wan-Bissaka depart, a replacement is likely, but Dalot will remain the top choice.

Leny Yoro

United made a significant move by signing Leny Yoro, beating out Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Real Madrid. The 18-year-old’s £52 million fee raised some eyebrows, given his Lille contract was set to expire next year. However, Yoro is considered one of the world’s most promising young talents and is seen as an ideal replacement for Raphael Varane, who left as a free agent. Yoro’s price tag suggests he will be an immediate starter, and Ten Hag hopes he will quickly form a formidable partnership with Lisandro Martinez.

Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez is back to full fitness after missing much of last season due to injuries. Ten Hag made it clear how much Martinez’s absence was felt, not just at centre-back but also as a capable left-back who could have filled in for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia during their injury troubles. Ideally, INEOS would have signed Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite before Yoro. United’s two bids for Branthwaite, the latest at £50 million, were rejected, and it’s unlikely they will meet the £70 million asking price. However, if United return to the negotiation table and succeed, Branthwaite could share the workload with Yoro and Martinez.

Squad Adjustments

Besides Varane, Ten Hag also lost Willy Kambwala to Villarreal, creating space in the squad for Branthwaite. However, for a third attempt to be viable, one of Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof may also need to depart.
